Jackson’s SCOTUS Nomination and the Perceived Inferiority of Women: A Biblical Perspective

Jackson’s SCOTUS Nomination and the Perceived Inferiority of Women: A Biblical Perspective

Last Updated on April 10, 2022 6:35 AM by herald

You know that something is amiss when a woman and mother expresses the view that God is on the side of SCOTUS nominee Judge Ketanji Brown who not only refuses to define the term “woman” but, on the basis of her record, appears to have gone easy on pedophiles and sundry criminals.

We must be mindful not to judge but we cannot but ask:

How can God be on the side of a woman who by implication, is denying that God made male and female? Is that not what her failure to define a woman in response to a “trick” question implies? Is it really so complicated?

The mother, I submit, is in a logical if not moral, non sequitur.  Of course, for those who do not believe in God and the creation, no such contradiction or complication arises!  For the record we are not stating or implying anything about Judge Ketanji’s religious views.

Let it be clear, however, that as a male I admire Judge Jackson both as a professional and as a woman.  You do not have to be irreverent to say that she is charming and attractive; the two are not mutually exclusive. For this reason I do understand why women admire her as a fellow professional traveller and are willing to support her.

But all of that makes it more difficult to understand Jackson’s reluctance to identify as a woman and on behalf of women, especially those who just want to be women!  It is even more difficult to understand why some people want to “build back better” God’s wonderful creation. And that is my real point of departure.

Political Dimension

Nomination hearings for a Supreme Court Judge are a good feature of the American system of justice. However, as this and nominations in the past have demonstrated, other aspects of the American political system – primarily the balance in the House and Senate – render such hearings and the confirmation of such nominees suspect and often suboptimal from a jurisprudential point of view.

The fact that the House and Senate are currently controlled by an extreme leftist faction of the Democratic Party merely serves to exacerbate and obfuscate the matter.

No less naïve is the notion that Ms. Jackson will win the nomination because of her qualifications.  Believing that demonstrates the superficiality of some of the women who support her.

Reading between the lines, their position seems to stem from the perception that women are inferior to men.  Therefore, any conflictual situation that involves a woman can only be resolved “justly” if the advantage is given to the woman simply because she is a woman, irrespective of other considerations.  That is how defective our intellectual and moral compass has become.

Moreover, the fact that she is black allows many to play the race card, much to the delight and reinforcement of the leftist agenda of the Democratic Party.

Additionally, we see biological men who, for one reason or another, desperately want to be women. In any case, the thrust is to close the gap between the genders and by any means. This is what the left calls gender equality

Unpacking Inferiority

Some are of the view that this (perceived) inferiority was part of God’s original design.  That premise would explain why many distance themselves from the idea of God by one, two or even three degrees of atheism.

But anybody who has been in a truly loving relationship with a woman knows that women are not inferior. They are just different and wonderfully so, I might add. Therefore, we must dig below the surface and critically address the notion of the inferiority of women.

As a retired tertiary level educator, I am painfully aware that critical thinking is not an enterprise many educated people today understand, care for or practice. Education today is about pieces of paper called certificates, a job making oodles of money and the best material things life can offer.

But I am happy to expend the intellectual effort to demonstrate what is meant by “critical thinking”.  I do so unashamedly and unapologetically from the viewpoint of a professing, Bible believing Christian. I hope others will be inspired to do so and come to realize that Christian belief and values can subjected to rational analysis.

Biblical Perspective

There are at least two distinctly different meanings of inferiority.  One set of meanings is represented by synonyms such as “mediocre”, “lesser” and “second-rate”.  The other set of meanings is represented by synonyms such as “subservient”, “subordinate” and “menial”.

The first set of meanings addresses the issue of quality. Therefore, the notion that women are inferior means that they are of lesser quality.  That can only be described as a diabolical lie because Scripture does not support that view:

Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good!  Gen 1:31a NLT

The second set of meanings of inferiority relate to the position of women in relation to authority.  A careful reading of the Genesis account suggests that the position of women as “subordinate” to men was not God’s original design but is a product of The Fall.

To the woman He said: “I will sharply increase your pain in childbirth; in pain you will bring forth children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.” Gen 3:16 BSB

But readers should also note that neither the man nor the creation itself escaped the consequences of The Fall:

And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat, cursed is the ground because of you; through toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.…

Gen 3:17 BSB

Don’t look now, but in this fallen world, nothing works the way it was intended!  It is stupid to deny that women have been used, abused, pimped, enslaved etc. But the reader should ask himself or herself if and how idiotic “build back” schemes such as gender neutrality, homosexuality, gender choice that go against the divine order will change the painful experience or the status of women. Can they? Are they? It is hard to kick against the pricks. No pun intended.

Some of those who promote these enterprises and the inferiority of women use this Bible verse as their point of departure and point of ire:

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. Ephesians 5:23 BSB

First of all, any other advice given by the apostle would be countering the mandate God gave in Genesis 3:16.  God is not the author of confusion but of consistency.

Lifting any text out of its context is almost always a dangerous exercise. So, readers of this passage will “strain at a gnat and swallow a camel” if they do not read the ensuing verses where the writer is setting out a system of authority that is essential not only for the functioning of the church but the family in the current fallen world.

Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.  Ephesians 5:23 BSB

But the authority of the husband does not give the man any right whatsoever to abuse either wife or children. In fact, husbands are commanded to love their wives and anything less than that is as a much an abuse of authority as a civil servant or president taking a bribe.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her… Ephesians 5:25 BSB

Kingdom Authority

God’s kingdom is all about authority. In fact, God is the only source of authority on this earth!  On this blog we call it Kingdom Authority. It is authority that was first given to Adam in the garden and restored to Jesus, the last Adam!

God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” Genesis 1:28 NIV

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Matt 28:18 ESB

In between its delegation to Adam and its restoration to man, Lucifer had acquired that authority by default.  This is Lucifer speaking to Jesus on the occasion of the temptations:

“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,” he said. “For it has been relinquished to me, and I can give it to anyone I wish.  Luke 4:6 BSB

Hopefully, it is clear why we argue that Christians have, as a matter of principle, to think twice about supporting Ms. Jackson’s nomination.  Christians should be very mindful of the warning Jesus gave:

“Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me. Matt 12:30 NLT

Ms. Jackson may look like a professional, talk like a professional and be educated as a professional but Ms. Jackson is kicking against the pricks by promoting or tacitly supporting the leftist, anti-creation ideology.  On principle, Christians simply cannot support her nomination because it implies that we disagree with God’s creation and his word on the subject.

Incidentally, I hope it was noticed that Ms. Jackson cries like a woman and not like a man or a “neutragender”.  Interesting contradiction!

Conclusion

No matter how much we like Judge Jackson as an individual person and no matter how much we identify with her as a black person, we must recognize that her nomination will be won, not by her charm and qualifications per se but because she is playing into the perverted, anti-creation, “softist” rhetoric of the leftists who, as we mentioned above, are currently in the majority in the American government.

Having said that, I for one hope she will surprise us and redeem herself when the review of Roe vs Wade comes along later this year because that is where this is heading.  Then America will once again be in the balance, pun intended.  I still believe in miracles, do you?
