The only people who would have been disappointed when Jesus did not return on September 23 as pundits predicted, would be those who do not study the Bible. That would include many of those who say they are Christians. Oops!
Before you take up that stone to throw at me, remember I am just a messenger!
When the disciples asked Jesus in Matthew 24:13, ““when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” he gave them a long list of events, starting at Matthew 24:4. Many of them included natural disasters such as earthquakes, famines, pestilences (diseases) as well as wars and rumours of wars.
Of course, ever since Covid-19, we have come to learn that many so-called “natural disasters”, especially climate disasters, are the deliberate work of people who look just like us, but have lost both their hearts and their minds!
After pointing to all of these signs, Jesus made a surprising statement; surprising to the disciples, but not to us who have been (should have been) reading his words ever since the Bible was put together. He said “but the end is not yet”.
What? You mean that after all these events; earthquakes, diseases, famines, wars etc the end is yet to come? You are heard that right!
Then Jesus went on to give this one sign which will MUST happen before “the end of the age” comes:
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. Matthew 24:14 NIV
And that is the one reason why many will be surprised at the second coming of Jesus. If you are seeing this verse for the first time your knowledge of the scripture might be on very shaky ground. Chances are you might be missing other important details.
We can see and hear about earthquakes, diseases, famines, wars etcetera but the one thing many people, both Christian and non-Christians, may NOT have a clue about is when the gospel has been preached in all the world.
Well, has it? The answer is a resounding, “no”. Even as we speak there are hundreds of people working to get the gospel to every single nation, every ethnic group, every tribe on the earth.
Are you likely to be following this development? I doubt it! Because only then would you come anywhere close to finding out when Jesus is retuning.
But then here is the real problem: we are victims of our own concept of time. In God’s grand scheme of things, our time is called chronos time; it is time we measure out in days, weeks months years. Calendar time.
But do you really think that God who dwells in eternity needs to plan things according to chronos time? It’s a no brainer! God operates in kairos time. That is why Jesus himself said of his coming:
But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Matthew 24:36 NIV
Have you seen our video on kairos time? Here it is.
Are You Ready?
Dear friend, do not waste time wondering about the exact date Jesus will return; it is futile. Focus on getting ready for his coming! Jesus was so concerned about readiness for his coming that he gave parable after parable about it.
If you have to ask where to find them, you really now need to read your Bible! Find them and study them.
It is about time we trust Jesus rather than social media influencers!
